ALMA - The Alma baseball team split a pair of games with Gladwin on Monday. In game one, the Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the second as a squeeze bunt brought home freshman Damon Anguiano, but the guests answered back with one to tie the game. Alma would again scratch across a run in the third, but in the top of the fourth Gladwin exploded for five runs. Sophomore Konner Vedrode took the tough-luck loss on the day. In game two, Alma took an early lead and never looked back. Alma scored two in the first, and added five more in the second to take a 7-0 lead. The Panthers would add two more in the sixth, before sending Gladwin down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to take a 9-0 victory. Senior Zach Hanson (10-0) got the win, going seven in the nightcap. Alma will be back in action of Wednesday, when they host St. Louis for a 4:00 p.m. start at Alma College.
Baseball
The Panther baseball team took two from Chesaning on Friday, 11-1 in five innings and 6-3. In game one, sophomore Konner Vedrode got the win. In game two, senior Zach Hanson got the nod on the mound, and improved to 9-0 on the season. The Panthers are now 13-11 on the season, and wrap up TVC Central action at 7-7. Alma will be back in action on Monday, when they host the Flying G's of Gladwin for a 4:00 p.m. start. Golf The Alma golf team took second on Friday as they traveled to the Fields, in Ithaca, for the Ithaca Invitational. The team shot a 348 on the day. Junior Cody Yates led the way with a 76 for the Panthers, which was good for second. Senior Chance Allen took 11th, with an 89 on the day, while senior Logan Pierce took 13th with a 91. Senior Aaron Messer rounded out the scoring, finishing 18th with a 95. Track The Panther track and field team competed at the MHSAA Regional competition on Friday at Chippewa Hills. Senior Chase Austin was the lone state qualifier, as he took second in the 110 meter hurdles. He also took third in the 300 meter hurdles, finishing just two hundredths of a second shy of qualifying for the State meet as well. The Panthers will have their final TVC meet on Wednesday at Hemlock, before having qualifiers compete in the Morning Sun Meet of Champions on May 26th, followed by Austin traveling to the State meet on May 30th. Softball The Panther softball team took two from Chesaning on Friday, winning 10-1 and 7-3. In game one, the Panthers were up 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth before a five run inning opened the game up. Sophomore Evelyn Vandemark led the way with three hits in game one, while senior Kendall Vedrode and junior Taylor Kinnunen each added two hits. In game two, the Panthers trailed 3-2 after two, but came back with five unanswered runs over the next three innings to take a 7-3 victory. Senior Justina Moreno and freshman Olivia Apple each had two hits to lead the way for the team. Alma is now 18-14 on the season, and 7-7 in the TVC Central. The team will play again on Monday when they host Montabella. ALMA - The Alma girls soccer team fell to Hemlock 5-4 on Wednesday evening. The Panthers struck first as freshman Sydney Hanson found fellow freshman Tia Everdeen who beat the keeper to make the score 1-0 in the third minute. Hemlock would answer around the 15th minute to level the score at one. The Huskies would then add another before the half, to make the score 2-1 in favor of the guests. Hemlock would then score twice quickly in the second half, before adding a fifth unanswered goal to make the score 5-1. The comeback would be on. Sophomore Christiana Stankewitz would find Everdeen to cut the Hemlock lead to 5-2. Then in the 72nd minute, Hanson would force a Hemlock turnover, split a pair of defenders, and then beat another inside 18 before lacing the ball into side netting. Four minutes later it would be Hanson again. Freshman Mara Benitez would hit Hanson on a throw, she turned around a defender and then beat the keeper upstairs to make the score 5-4 with four minutes to play. The Huskies would then stall out the remainder of the clock to end the game at 5-4. Alma is now 5-9-4 on the season, and will finish fourth in the TVC West with a 2-5-1 record. The Panthers will be back in action Monday when they host Mt. Morris.
ALMA - The Alma baseball team traded wins with Ovid-Elsie on Tuesday, as they won game one 5-0, before falling 5-3 in the nightcap. Senior Zach Hanson improved to 8-0 on the season as he got the nod in game one, going seven innings and striking out ten while allowing just two hits. The Panthers (11-11, 5-7 TVC Central) scored five runs in the first two innings, and then cruised to the 5-0 victory. In game two, the Panthers fell behind 5-0. In the third, Alma scratched across three runs with two outs. Alma threatened a couple more times, but failed to get another run across. Junior Chester Fillhard got the loss, going four innings and allowing five runs (three earned). The Panthers will wrap up their conference season on Friday. Alma will travel to Chesaning for a 4:00 first pitch with the Indians.
The Panther softball team won two games by a big margin on Friday as they defeated Ovid-Elsie 15-0 in three innings and 12-2 in seven. In game one, the Panthers scored five in the first, and two in the second, before a huge third inning plated seven Panther baserunners to end the game at 15-0. Alma was aided by ten walks by the Marauder pitcher. Senior Bree Brown, junior Emma Ceja, and sophomore Emmy Vanblaricum all had two hits in the opener, with Brown, Ceja, and junior Taylor Kinnunen all scoring three times. Freshman Amanda Efaw threw a three inning perfect game in the opener. In the nightcap, the Panthers led 6-2 going into the final inning before exploding for six more runs to make a 12-2 final. Senior Justina Moreno led the way for the Panthers with three hits and a walk. Ceja added three hits and scored three times. Sophomore Evelyn VanDemark added a pair of hits and three runs. Vanblaricum got the win in game two, going all seven and striking out 13, while allowing two runs. The Panthers will conclude their TVC campaign on Friday when they travel to Chesaning for a matchup with the Indians.
ITHACA - The Alma girls soccer team fell on Wednesday to Ithaca 1-0. The Panthers dominated possession in the first half, but were unable to get any chances. After surviving the first 40 minutes, the host Yellow Jackets gained control in the second and created a bevy of chances before breaking through in the 69th minute after a corner kick bounced around inside six and found net just inside the near post. Freshman Sydney Hanson found junior Maggie Bever through on net for a pair of chances in the last minute, but one was saved and another sailed just high and the score remained 1-0 in favor of the hosts. Alma is now 2-4-1 in TVC West action, with one final matchup with Hemlock on Wednesday. The Panthers are 5-8-4 overall.
The Alma girls tennis team wrapped up TVC action on Friday at the TVC Tournament. The Panthers took fourth as a team, their highest finish in a few years. Frankenmuth won the league, followed by Chesaning and Essexville Garber. Senior Cali Anderson led the team, taking second in the number four singles position. The Panthers had a pair of doubles team that took third as well, with both the number two doubles team of Breanna Howey and Aubrey Dunlap, and the number four doubles team of Kaylynn Brecht and Haley Tessman losing close matches in the semi-finals. Alma will compete again on Wednesday when they travel to Sparta for a tri-meet with the Spartans and Greenville. The Alma boys golf team traveled to the Pines Golf Club to compete at the Chipp Hills Invite on Friday. The team finished 7th with a 381. Junior Cody Yates led the way with an 87, while sophomore Brock Martin added a 92. Seniors Logan Pierce and Aaron Messer added a 100 and a 102 respectively. The team will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Hemlock for a TVC Jamboree.
The Alma tennis team took down Bridgeport to conclude their regular season on Wednesday. The Panthers won all eight matches on the afternoon. With the victory, the Panthers conclude their conference slate with a 5-4 record. The team is 5-5-1 overall on the year. The Panthers will compete next on Friday at the TVC Tournament.

Sophomore Tristan Villalobos would pick up three RBI on a squeeze bunt, and then add another on another bunt an inning later to make the game 8-2. The Panthers will travel to Swan Valley on Friday to take on the Vikings.
