MOUNT PLEASANT - The Alma baseball and softball squads both fell in district semi-finals on Saturday. The baseball team dropped a 7-2 decision and the softball team fell 17-1 in four innings. The baseball semi-final saw the Panthers fall behind 1-0 in the first before climbing back to take a 2-1 lead in the second on a two-out error. Base runners would be at a premium after that inning though. Freeland would score six unanswered runs. Seniors Matt Young and Tyler Minnick scored runs for the Panthers. Sophomore Justin Doyle (5-2) would take the loss, allowing five runs in three innings of work. The game marks the end of the panther careers for Minnick, Young, and fellow senior Toph Roethlisberger. Minnick and Young were four-year starters, and Roethlisberger was a two-year varsity player. The Panthers finish the season with a 17-10 record, and took third in the Tri-Valley Central Division.
The softball team fell behind 8-0 in the first inning, and couldn't recover after that. In the bottom of the first the Panthers scraped across one as junior Karli Hyatt singled and then junior Kendall Vedrode double in Hyatt the next at bat. The Panthers would hold Freeland to only one more run until the fourth inning, when the Falcons would explode for eight runs to make the final score 17-1. Alma finished the year with a 7-21 record, their most wins since 2010. Alma also won their first district game for the class of 2014 seniors. Alma will return a core group of their team next season, graduating only Kaleigh Kovac.
