The Alma softball team took two from Freeland on Tuesday, as they won by scores of 4-2 and 15-8 (in 8 innings). In game one freshman Amanda Efaw would get the win as she went seven innings and allowed just one earned run while striking out six. The Panthers would score first in the bottom of the second, and then add two more in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead. In the top of the fourth, however, Freeland answered back with two runs to cut the lead to 3-2. Alma would then add one more in the bottom of five and the score would hold at 4-2. Senior Justina Moreno and junior Taylor Kinnunen led the way at the plate in game one. Both had a pair of hits, and Moreno added an RBI. In game two the Panthers found themselves down 5-0 after two. In the third, the Alma bats came alive to level the score a 5-5. Alma would then pour on three more in the fourth to take a 8-5 lead. In the bottom of the fourth Freeland would tie the game once again, at eight a piece. The teams would go through the seventh tied and need extras. The Panthers would only need one extra frame. Alma put up seven runs in the top of the eighth to take a 15-8 lead. Sophomore Emmy Vanblaricum would get the win in relief, going 6.1 innings and fanning three. Junior Emma Ceja paced the Panthers, going 4-5 at the plate. Senior Kendall Vedrode added three hits, two RBI, and scored three times as well. Alma will continue their campaign on Friday when they travel to Swan Valley.
The Alma Panther soccer team defeated Chesaning 8-0 on Monday. Junior Bailey McCarthy paced the Panthers as she scored two goals and added an own goal to her credit as well. Freshman Sydney Hanson added a goal and three assists on the evening, while sophomore Cora Mallory added a pair of goals as well. Senior Jessica Holloman and freshman Tia Everdeen each added a goal and an assist, and junior Cali Ackels tallied an assist. The Panthers will return to action Wednesday when they travel to Ovid-Elsie.
The Panther tennis team took down Caro by a score of 7-1 on Monday. The Panthers swept the singles matches, and won three of the four doubles matches as well. All four Alma athletes won in straight sets in the singles competitions as Isabella Rivera, Mikayla Mallery, Maddie Wert, and Cali Anderson won one, two, three, and four singles respectively. The three doubles teams won in straight sets as well, as Jamie Dubey and Sarah Goodrich won 6-3, 6-2, Bre Howey and Haley Tessman won 6-2, 6-0, and Kaydee Hall and Emily Gladding won 6-2, 7-5. The team will host Bridgeport on Wednesday for a match with the Bearcats.
Baseball
The Alma baseball team split with Hemlock on Friday, before dropping a pair of games to Ionia on Saturday. On Friday the Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 in the first, but Hemlock answered with five runs to make the score 5-2. Sophomore Konner Vedrode (1-3) took the loss. In the nightcap, the Panthers again scored twice early, and this time would hold the 2-0 lead. Senior Zach Hanson improved to 4-0 with the win, going seven innings and allowing just four hits. Vedrode added a pair of hits and scored both runs in the win. On Saturday the Panthers fell twice. Sophomore Tristan Villalobos (2-2) got the loss in game one. In game two, the Panthers held a 6-5 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, but the hosts put up two to take a 7-6 lead. Junior Chester Fillhard (1-1) took the loss in game two. Alma will be back in action Tuesday when they host Freeland. Softball Alma Panther softball split with Hemlock on Friday, and then followed it up with a tournament victory on Saturday at Pine River. On Hemlock the Panthers jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first, but Hemlock answered with two in the second to tie the game. Alma came back in the third to make it a 4-2 game, and would add solo runs in the fourth and sixth to make the game 6-2 before Hemlock would add one in the seventh. In game two the Panthers held a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, but a huge inning by Hemlock would make the game 6-3. Freshman Kemmie Shunk had three hits on the evening, while senior Kendall Vedrode had two hits and reached home three times. On Saturday, Junior Taylor Kinnunen had four hits on the day to lead the Panthers to a tournament victory. Vedrode had a pair of hits and three walks as she scored six times. Alma won the opener 14-3 over Pine River before winning the championship 18-0 over Kent City. Alma will continue their season on Tuesday when they host Freeland. Tennis Panther tennis team tied Big Rapids on Friday. The Panthers earned one win in singles competitions, and three in doubles. Senior Cali Anderson got the win in number one singles. Three doubles teams earned wins on the day as the teams of Jamie Dubey and Sarah Goodrich at number one doubles and Kaylynn Brecht and Haley Tessman at number four singles both won in straight sets, while Bre Howey and Aubrey Dunlap won in three sets. The team will play again on Monday when they host Caro. Track and Field The Alma track and field team competed at the Shepherd invite on Friday. The girls took ninth on the day out of 18 teams, while boys took 14th out of 21. Senior Chase Austin was the lone winner of the day, as he won the 110 hurdles in their division. The Panthers will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Shepherd for a dual meet. The Alma tennis team fell 7-1 to perennial power Frankenmuth on Thursday. The Panthers got their loan win at number four doubles, as junior Haley Tessman and sophomore Danette Teed were able to nab a three set victory. The Panthers had a handful of other tight three set matches, but the more experienced Frankenmuth team was able to get the edge in those. Alma will be back in action today when they take on Big Rapids, and they will compete with Caro and Bridgeport next week.
The Alma golf team took third on Thursday at the TVC Jamboree hosted by Chesaning. The Panthers traveled to Twin Brooks Golf Club, and shot a 176 on the day. Freeland won the match with a 171, while the hosts took second with a 174. Junior Cody Yates was medalist on the day, shooting a 38. Seniors Logan Pierce and Chance Allen added a 44 and 45 respectively, and sophomore Brock Martin added a 49. The team will compete again Wednesday when they travel to Hemlock for another TVC Jamboree.
ALMA - The Alma girls soccer team took on Midland Bullock Creek on Wednesday, and fell 4-1. The game was played pretty evenly in both possession and shots on frame, but the Lancers were able to make more of their opportunities. The Panthers struck first, as freshman Sydney Hanson dug a ball out of the defensive end before carrying up the sideline, cutting across 18 and burying the ball upper ninety to make the score 1-0 at the 30 minute mark. Creek would answer back with a goal in the next five minutes, and it looked like the score would head into the break level at 1-1. A desperation launch from 30 yards out, however, would find the twine as the horn sounded to give Creek a 2-1 advantage. Alma would not be able to find net again, and Creek would answer with two more to make the final score 4-1. Alma is now 3-5-4 on the season, while Bullock Creek improves to 6-5. Alma will be back in action Friday, when they travel to Big Rapids to take on the Cardinals.
The Alma boys and girls track and field teams hosted Bullock Creek and Hemlock on Wednesday. On the girls side, the Panthers took down the Lancers 79-58 and the Huskies 94-34. The boys handled Hemlock 84-51, but the decision with the Lancers came down to the final event. Alma edged Bullock Creek in the 4x400 as the team of senior Chase Austin, juniors Brenden Howard and Hayden Bailey, and sophomore Anthony Humm. Alma won the meet 72-64. The Panthers next compete Friday at Shepherd for the Blue Jay Invitational. The Alma girls tennis team traveled to Hemlock to take on the Huskies on Wednesday. The Panthers won three singles and three doubles matches, to win by a score of 6-2. Seniors Isabella Rivera and Cali Anderson got three set wins at number 1 and number 4 respectively. Junior Mikayla Mallery won in straight sets at number 2 singles. All three of the Panthers' doubles victories came in three sets, as juniors Jamie Dubey and Sarah Goodrich won at number one doubles, sophomore Bre Howey and freshman Aubrey Dunlap won at number 2 doubles, and junior Haley Tesman and sophomore Kaylynn Brecht won at number four doubles. Girls tennis will travel to Frankenmuth today for a 4:00 match.
The boys golf team traveled to Freeland for a TVC Jamboree on Wednesday. The Panthers took fourth on the day, shooting a 194. Freeland won on the day with a 181, followed by Chesaning with 182 and Swan Valley with a 193. Junior Cody Yates led the Panthers with a 42, while senior Chance Allen shot a 43. Sophomore Brock Martin and senior Logan Pierce rounded off the team scores with a 54 and 55 respectively. The Panthers compete again today when they travel to Twin Oaks for the Chesaning Jamboree.
