Baseball
The Alma baseball team split with Hemlock on Friday, before dropping a pair of games to Ionia on Saturday. On Friday the Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 in the first, but Hemlock answered with five runs to make the score 5-2. Sophomore Konner Vedrode (1-3) took the loss. In the nightcap, the Panthers again scored twice early, and this time would hold the 2-0 lead. Senior Zach Hanson improved to 4-0 with the win, going seven innings and allowing just four hits. Vedrode added a pair of hits and scored both runs in the win. On Saturday the Panthers fell twice. Sophomore Tristan Villalobos (2-2) got the loss in game one. In game two, the Panthers held a 6-5 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, but the hosts put up two to take a 7-6 lead. Junior Chester Fillhard (1-1) took the loss in game two. Alma will be back in action Tuesday when they host Freeland.
Softball
Alma Panther softball split with Hemlock on Friday, and then followed it up with a tournament victory on Saturday at Pine River. On Hemlock the Panthers jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first, but Hemlock answered with two in the second to tie the game. Alma came back in the third to make it a 4-2 game, and would add solo runs in the fourth and sixth to make the game 6-2 before Hemlock would add one in the seventh. In game two the Panthers held a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, but a huge inning by Hemlock would make the game 6-3. Freshman Kemmie Shunk had three hits on the evening, while senior Kendall Vedrode had two hits and reached home three times. On Saturday, Junior Taylor Kinnunen had four hits on the day to lead the Panthers to a tournament victory. Vedrode had a pair of hits and three walks as she scored six times. Alma won the opener 14-3 over Pine River before winning the championship 18-0 over Kent City. Alma will continue their season on Tuesday when they host Freeland.
Tennis
Panther tennis team tied Big Rapids on Friday. The Panthers earned one win in singles competitions, and three in doubles. Senior Cali Anderson got the win in number one singles. Three doubles teams earned wins on the day as the teams of Jamie Dubey and Sarah Goodrich at number one doubles and Kaylynn Brecht and Haley Tessman at number four singles both won in straight sets, while Bre Howey and Aubrey Dunlap won in three sets. The team will play again on Monday when they host Caro.
Track and Field
The Alma track and field team competed at the Shepherd invite on Friday. The girls took ninth on the day out of 18 teams, while boys took 14th out of 21. Senior Chase Austin was the lone winner of the day, as he won the 110 hurdles in their division. The Panthers will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Shepherd for a dual meet.
