ALMA - The Panther football team concluded their 2014 campaign with a 30-14 win over Newaygo on Friday night. With the win the Panthers improved to 4-5 on the season, while the Lions fell to 7-2. Alma struck first as junior Justin Doyle ran it in from 18 yards out. Newaygo answered with a touchdown of their own, but the Panthers blocked the extra point. In the second quarter, Doyle hit senior Damian Castillo and sophomore Konner Vedrode each for touchdown passes to push their lead out to 20-6 heading into halftime. In the third quarter senior Boyd Hubbard punched in a touchdown from four yards out to make the score 27-6 and then in the fourth junior Brevan Bender put in a field goal from 45-yards out. Newaygo scored late, but it was not enough as the Panthers cruised to a 16-point victory. Sophomore Ryan Cornejo led the defense with 9.5 tackles on the night. Alma will return a solid core of players for 2015 including Doyle, Vedrode and Cornejo.
