ALMA - In a season where the Panthers boys soccer team broke countless records en route to an 18-4-1 record and TVC West championship the year would end at the hands of unbeaten Saginaw Swan Valley (15-0-3) in overtime Saturday evening. Coming into the game, the Panthers had only trailed in games against schools of their size three times all season for a total of about 25 minutes, but Alma found themselves in a hole late in the first frame as Justin Neilson volleyed a shot in with about three minutes to go to put the Vikings up 1-0. The lead would hold until around the 65th minute when junior Adam Moeggenborg would take a free kick that would find the feet of senior Zach Hanson whose slotted ball would be tapped in by senior Giovanni Polini to equalize the score at one a piece.
The game would stay at 1-1 at the end of regulation and the teams would need overtime to find a winner. It would be Neilson though who would score on a controversial goal for the Vikings a couple minutes into the first overtime session. After a red card a few minutes later the Panthers would then have to play with ten men for the remainder of the match. The team ended their season with a record of 18-4-1 - the best record of any team in school history.
The 17th edition of the Alma High School boys soccer program broke eight school records on the year, and was the first team ever to win every single game in conference play. Nine seniors played their last game in a Panther uniform on Saturday as Brett Stebelton, Bryce DeVore, Giovanni Polini, Jacob Adams, Josh Morey, Nick Moeggenborg, Quentin Gibson, Spencer Benn and Zach Hanson all will move on after this year. The Panthers will return a solid core of guys for 2015, including their leading goal scorer in junior Brevan Bender, goal keeper in junior Korbin Kovac, and center back in junior Adam Moeggenborg.
