The Alma Panthers wrestling team took down Clare and Laingsburg on Tuesday night. The Panthers were dominant in the two matches, with a bevy of wrestlers winning two matches on the night. The team was led by seniors Boyd Hubbard and Damian Castillo who each won two matches on the day. Junior Gilbert Rosas added two wins of his own, while freshmen Alex Rosas and Jaden Jerome also won two matches. The matches were the last for the Panthers heading into winter break, and the team will look to continue their success when they next return to action.

ALMA - The short-handed Panthers were overmatched by the visitors on Tuesday night as they fell by a final score of 59-27. Sophomores Kenzie Seeley and Madison Doolittle accounted for all 27 points on the night as Seeley had 16 and Doolittle added 11. With the loss, the Panthers dropped to 2-3 on the season and 0-2 in TVC Central action. The Falcons improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the league. Alma will return to action on Friday as they host Shepherd (1-4, 0-2 TVC Central) for a 6:00 p.m. tip at Alma College.
ALMA - The Panther boys basketball held off a late run from the visiting Falcons (2-1, 0-1 TVC Central) on Tuesday, concluding with a ten point victory on the evening. The Panthers pushed their lead out to as much as 15 entering the fourth quarter, but the Falcons cut the score to four late in the fourth, but the Panthers ended the game on a 10-4 run. Sophomore Konner Vedrode again paced the team in scoring as he had 14 on the night. Junior Dylan Carl had 13 points and 12 rebounds while senior Slade Martin added six points and nine rebounds off the bench. The Panthers (2-0, 1-0 TVC Central) will turn around Friday when they host rival Shepherd for a 7:30 p.m. tip at Alma College. Alma has won five straight against the Blue Jays (0-3, 0-1 TVC Central).
The Panthers had three wrestlers go a perfect 5-0 at the Birch Run Duals on Saturday. The team was led by the senior duo of Boyd Hubbard and Damian Castillo who both had perfect records on the day. Junior Gilbert Rosas had maybe the best performance of the day though, as he went 5-0 with five victories by pin. Freshman Greg Simmons also went undefeated on the day with a 3-0 record. Freshman Alex Rosas went 4-1 on the day.
The shorthanded girls basketball team fell to Midland Bullock Creek on Thursday by a score of 45-16. The team fell behind 24-5 in the first half, and couldn't recover from there. Sophomore Tayla Guerrero led the Panthers with seven on the night. Alma (2-2, 0-1 TVC Central) will next play on Tuesday when they travel to Freeland to face off with the Falcons (2-1, 1-0 TVC Central) for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
PORTLAND - The Alma boys basketball team opened their season with a convincing win on Tuesday at Portland. The team used a suffocating defense and timely outside shooting to run the Raiders out of their own gym by a score of 82-57. Junior Darren Olejniczak got the scoring started for the Panthers as he hit back to back threes to start the game. After a steal followed Olejniczak's second three, sophomore Konner Vedrode would hit a three of his own to make the score 9-1 a minute in. The Panthers wouldn't stop there as the Raiders never got the lead closer than the rest of the game. Vedrode had 29 points on the night to lead all scorers, while junior Dylan Carl added 19 points and 11 rebounds of his own. The team forced over 20 turnovers on the night, and looks to carry its momentum forward as it will open TVC Central action next Tuesday at Freeland.
The girls team improved their record to 2-1 on the year as they rolled past twin city rival St. Louis 56-32. Alma was powered by sophomore Kenzie Seeley who led all scorers with 25 points on the night. Fellow sophomore Tayla Guerrero had 12 while senior Kendall Vedrode added eight. The girls will open their 2014-15 TVC Central campaign on Thursday when they travel to Midland to face off with the defending conference champion Bullock Creek Lancers. Bowling ALMA - The Panthers girls basketball team notched their first win of the season on Friday night as they took down the visiting Wildcats 46-45 on a shot by sophomore Tayla Guerrero with 0.5 seconds to go. The Panthers came out with lockdown defense as they held the Cats scoreless through the first five minutes. Lakeview quickly righted the ship as they stormed back and took a 29-28 lead going into the half. Lakeview led for most of the second half, but the Panthers gained the lead with about four minutes to go. Lakeview then pushed their own lead back out to five. Alma cut it to one in the late seconds. Inside the last ten seconds senior Kendall Vedrode had a three pointer in the corner go in and out but sophomore Madison Doolittle got the rebound and found Guerrero. Vedrode had five three pointers on the night for a total of 15 points while sophomore Kenzie Seeley paced the way with 17. Junior Taylor Kinnunen added 12 rebounds. The Panthers will continue their second on Tuesday when they host St. Louis for a 7:30 tip.
The Alma Panthers girls basketball opened the season last night with a loss at the hands of Ionia. The Panthers saw the graduation of Maddy Seeley and Lexi Morton and will look to replace the production of the two. Ionia started the game on a 14-0 run, and the Panthers could not recover from that. From that point on the Bulldogs only outscored the visitors by five. Senior Kendall Vedrode led the way with 15 for the Panthers while junior Kenzie Seeley added 11 of her own. The Panthers will continue their campaign on Friday with a home game against Lakeview for a 7:30 p.m. start.
